Many members thus far have taken up Carol Hendzel's offerings of
excellent opportunities to enhance or begin their own Garden Railways.
Sunday January 18 was no exception. Dozens of members converged on the
Stony Hill Farm to claim great items of their pleasure. In liquidating
late husband John's extensive collection, Carol was pleased to have
passed the halfway point in moving out hundreds of articles from animals
& buildings to scenery & tools. Although many fine items went at 1/2
price or less, there are still many desirables left. Carol plans on
staying around the club for awhile (YESSS!!!) and has even volunteered
to do a little phone contacting if needed for members without e-mail.

Most members attending the sale met at
St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in
McDonald immediately afterward. Many thanks to Gene & Caryll Linck and
Dee and Charlie Christ for organizing and coordinating the hall and
dinner. Most everyone pitched in by bringing a dish or other need and
helping with set up and clean up.
New President Bill took the reigns by touching on key points and ideas
that he envisions making the club more fun and inclusive. The
newsletter will now be electronically delivered to those with e-mail but
mailed via USPS as it has always been for those without. The e-mail
connected people will notice many pluses in unlimited digital pictures
as well as video and links to other interests! Anybody with a digital
camera is encouraged to take pictures at club events or even non-events
that might be of interest to members and forward them to
firstname.lastname@example.org. This is everybody's chance to easily
contribute to the newsletter & see your interest published!
Sondra Wiggins has volunteered to send hard copy to those who need it as
well as starting a data base for member info. Sondra plans on gathering
relevant info, interests and a picture from each member willing to
contribute. Eventually there will be a club site where members can
place a name to a face and other specific interests, Garden Railroad
or otherwise. This will bring our "club family" closer together
especially for those who cannot make many events. The option of
exploring common interests will exist even outside of normal club
activities IF those members so prefer. We hope to achieve the fullest
participation possible to enhance every member's experience.
There was also talk of having a library of books available for members
to trade/borrow amongst themselves but this and any other areas of
interest can be coordinated through the club site by any member who
cares to use the benefit.
Information on Children's hospital is slow in coming, but the project is
a definite go. Stay tuned for more info.
The East Coast Large Scale Train Show was discussed and information can
be found elsewhere in the newsletter. Officers will gather at the
February Greenberg show to firm up a calendar for 2009.
Lastly, results were discussed of a prior survey that Bill sent out a
few weeks earlier was discussed and will have a bearing on the calendar
and events going forward. Almost half the membership answered the
survey and some brief highlights include:
Oktoberfest was the most highly attended event of 2008 followed by the
March workshops/covered dinner; Greenberg shows were third.
The annual dinner meeting and also the picnic were favorably viewed
while members largely expressed interests in more train trips, more
workshops presented by members (or outsiders!) and more garden tours of

one of these possible activities that you might see yourself getting
involved with. Our club is gaining more depth and direction now; come
on board and make the most of your trip!
