Chasing Trains - Big and Little

After a second helping of cookies at the PGRS picnic, Dave Bodnar indicated that some additional notes, ramblings, and information were in order for the PGRS newsletter. Unfortunately his words fell on an audience of one (me) hence these comments for this, and perhaps, future issues if the readership is not too bored.

There have been some recent moves by hobby shops in the South Hills area.

Hobbytown USA is moving to a new location within Robinson Towne Center. The store will reopen on Sept 18th at 2000 Park Manor Blvd ( between Home Goods and Kirklands ). Thanks to Dave Maynard of the South Hills model RR club for this information.

A. B. Charles Hobby Shop, long a fixture in Dormont and later in Mt. Lebanon has gone south to Mc Murry. The address is 4045 Washington Rd , Mc Dowell Shops , Mc Murry Pa. 15317. Phone is (724)941-8900. Store hours are Mon-Sat 10-8 and Sundays 11- 4. The new store is attractive with a lot of merchandise displayed on new racks.

The Fort Pitt Chapter of the Train Collectors Association has meets on Sundays Oct.6 and Dec 1 at the Four Points Sheraton off Rt. 19 north. The meet is open to the public from 10-3.

The Castle Shannon Volunteer Fire Dept. train show is scheduled for Sunday Oct. 27th from 9-3 . The fire dept is located at 3600 Library Rd. (rt 88)

Please note we are heavy on South Hills information since that’s where the writer lives. Additional items are most welcome. Please call 412-344-5986 or e-mail BO5304@Verizon.net

An online site worth exploring is http://www.railserve.com/  which publishes schedules of the Norfolk Southern steam excursions. The 2013 trips are completed. In 2014 the two steamers Southern 2-8-0 # 630 and Nickel Plate 2-8-4# 765 will be joined by Southern Railway 2-8-2 # 4501. Many of these trips have been, and will be run on the old Pennsy main line through our area.

At a previous meeting there was mention of a organization located in New Freedom Pa. called Steam into History. It operates a passenger train between New Freedom and Hanover Junction Pa. This is the route of the special which carried Lincoln to Gettysburg a century and a half ago. The train including the locomotive is a reproduction of the consist used in this historic event. Detailed information can be obtained at 717-942-2370.
