A roll of burlap was cut into strips on the band saw.

First coat (burlap soaked in sand mix) drying in the sun.

Ready for the 2nd coat.

Day 2 - I tried using one large (approximately 2' x 2') piece of burlap - wet the dried surface thoroughly and soaked the burlap in thin sand mix - placed it on the dried concrete keeping things really wet.

Put 10 pound bag of mortar mix over the new piece of burlap while it was wet - covered about 3/4 of the surface.  This was a much thicker mix of mortar - it stuck well when placed with my hands.
